Hoof Trimming 101

Managing a flock comes with several maintenance items that every shepherd should learn how to do trimming hoofs is one of them. Now for some people you may only have to trim hooves once a year but you should check your flock periodically to make sure no one in the flock needs tending to. Some problems to look out for is over grown hooves, disformed hooves, and hoof rot. If you see a sheep limping you should check it out that could be a sign of a more serious issue.

I always check and trim hooves when I shear or anytime I have sheep at fairs. In a more wet spring where there is mud everywhere in my pasture if I see sheep limping I often will check the herd for signs of hoof rot and treat any that show signs. Now this year was a fairly dry year for me and I was able to trim hooves when shearing happened. Check out the video to learn how to trim hooves. As always if you have any questions please reach out to me and I would be happy to answer them.
